“My work must be as seductive as advertising and entertainment. If not, it loses its visibility in a culture saturated by media, constantly bombarding us with commercial messages. Since these messages have become part of the mainstream culture, it is vital that artists especially can infiltrate this culture with their subversive ideas.”

This week I’ve been looking in particular at the work of Micha Klein, an artist who rose to prominence in the late 1990s and early noughties, around the rise of Y2K aesthetic. His website states that his work explores media based culture of our time using computer technology, referencing to historical art, youth culture and mass media as a recurring subject. Klein’s work during this period tended to depict manipulated perfect people in stylistic virtual landscapes that appear otherworldy, a utopian virtual reality to escape into, that is both surreal and highly saturated pop art vision. His vision is ultimately different to my own in that he focuses on a futuristic utopia rather than the dystopia.
