Week 6, 7 & 8: Landings Prep

Landings 2020 is a joint exhibition between Falmouth Flexible’s MA & BA Top Up photography students to share the work they’ve been creating during their course. The exhibition runs from the 27th July – 3rd August 2020 at www.landings.space.

I decided to volunteer myself to help with Landings our university’s yearly online exhibition for flexible students, in particular to assist with advertising and social media as that’s where I knew I would be able to help in a meaningful way. The experience in assisting Sarah and fellow student Matthew (the head curator this year) has been very insightful.

I began with looking at the branding of previous years to see what had been done before and how we could retain a style which referenced back to previous years but was also different enough to put our own imprint and style to the Landings exhibition. I took a lot of influence from last years poster (having been a part of exhibition last year as BA top up) which had a white banner block at the bottom border and the fact they had no one official advert with the file going out to all who participated allowing them to place their own images to advertise the event on their websites.

From using the template last year I realised it wasn’t ratio friendly to Instagram, so this was one of my first thoughts when it came to creating the poster template this year – that the size needed to be no taller than 8×10 portrait as that is the limitation on height Instagram gives. Figure 1 features the first template mock up I made, which uses a combination of the fonts nextart and futurism. The final version of the template was tweaked by Marcel who was assigned to work with me on social media and advertising, placing a triangle inbetween Landings and 2020 as well as changing the A triangle colour and the placement of the advertising text as well as making it clear landings.space was in fact a website.

Unfortunately Marcel had work commitments and was unable to develop the advertising further so the final decision of which of the images to use for the initial social media post was left to me, however I didn’t feel this was fair so I put it to the vote, amongst the others in the curators team. We decided on Tim’s image, as it fit with the theme of metamorphosis as well as being an opening and beginning image that would lead us into the exhibition (Figure 2).

Althought it was originally decided that we probably wouldn’t have a showreel or trailer, I ended up making both, a 4:13 minute showreel showing 1 of each of the participants image (Figure 3) and a 15 second trailer suitable for social media sharing which also shows 1 of each of the participants images (Figure 4) (both trailers were reviewed with Matthew).
